How to Read Esports Betting Odds — Decimal Odds Explained for Malaysian Players

The most common question I get from new esports bettors isn't about which team to back — it's "how do I read these numbers?" Odds formats can look confusing the first time you see them. Once you understand decimal odds, everything else follows. This is a short explainer.

Decimal Odds: The Basics

96M displays odds in decimal format — the default in Malaysia and most of Southeast Asia. The number tells you your total return per MYR 1 staked, including your original stake back.

Examples:

• Odds of 1.50 — Bet MYR 100, win MYR 150 total (MYR 50 profit + MYR 100 stake back). This is a favourite.
• Odds of 2.00 — Bet MYR 100, win MYR 200 total (MYR 100 profit). This is an even-money bet.
• Odds of 3.50 — Bet MYR 100, win MYR 350 total (MYR 250 profit). This is an underdog.

The formula: Payout = Stake × Odds. That's it.

Implied Probability

Every set of odds has an implied probability — the win percentage the bookmaker is suggesting for that outcome.

Formula: Implied Probability = 1 ÷ Odds

• Odds 1.50 → 1 ÷ 1.50 = 0.667 = 66.7% implied win chance
• Odds 2.00 → 1 ÷ 2.00 = 0.50 = 50% implied win chance
• Odds 3.50 → 1 ÷ 3.50 = 0.286 = 28.6% implied win chance

This is useful because it lets you ask: do I think this team actually wins more often than the odds suggest? If the odds say 40% and you think it's 55%, that's a value bet.

The Overround (Why Odds Don't Add to 100%)

In a match between two teams, the implied probabilities of both outcomes will always add up to more than 100%. For example:

• Team A at 1.80 → 55.6% implied
• Team B at 2.10 → 47.6% implied
• Total: 103.2%

That extra 3.2% is the bookmaker's margin, called the overround or vig. It means that over the long run, the house takes a small cut on every market. This is normal and expected — the goal as a bettor is to find situations where your assessment of probability is better than the bookmaker's, so the edge works in your favour despite the margin.

Why Odds Move

Odds change for two main reasons:

• Betting volume — When a lot of money comes in on one side, the bookmaker shortens those odds to balance their exposure. If you see odds drop sharply before a match, it usually means sharp money came in.
• New information — Roster changes, roster confirmations, bootcamp results, or injury news. If a team's best player is confirmed out and odds haven't moved yet, that's the window.

Odds are most useful right when they open, before the market fully processes all information. Early bettors with better information lock in better prices.

Handicap Odds Explained

For series betting (Bo3 or Bo5), you'll see handicap markets like:

• Team A -1.5 games at 1.70 — Team A must win 2-0. If they win 2-1, this bet loses even though they won the match.
• Team B +1.5 games at 2.20 — Team B just needs to win at least one game. They can lose the match 1-2 and this still wins.

Handicap betting is useful when you have a strong view on the scoreline, not just the winner. A team you think wins 2-0 is worth more on the -1.5 handicap than on the match winner market.

Putting It Together: A Real Example

Todak vs a non-SEA opponent at M-Series. Todak is priced at 2.40 (implied: 41.7%). You think Todak wins this matchup roughly 55% of the time based on recent form and head-to-heads. The odds are offering you a price above your estimated probability — that's a value bet worth taking.
